Next month I will be working at a summer camp for young people and a big part of my training is understanding what mental health is, how to recognise poor mental health and how to approach an issue. I think it is amazing that the company are placing such importance on this and ensuring all staff are equipped with the knowledge to help young people going through tough times.
I thought over this next week I could share any notes from my training that may help you also!
When talking to someone about mental health or when dealing with a disclosure of a mental health problem, they advise there are some things you should try not to do.
Try not to:
React with horror or discomfort
Threaten or get angry
Ask abrupt or rapid questions
Engage in power struggles; demanding 'just stop'
Accuse them of attention seeking
Ignore other warning signs
Promise to keep things secret
