What NOT to say/do - Mental Health
Hello!
Next month I will be working at a summer camp for young people and a big part of my training is understanding what mental health is, how to recognise poor mental health and how to approach an issue. I think it is amazing that the company are placing such importance on this and ensuring all staff are equipped with the knowledge to Help young people going through tough times.
I thought over this next week I could share any notes from my training that may Help you also!
When talking to someone about mental health or when dealing with a disclosure of a mental health problem, they advise there are some things you should try not to do.
Try not to:
React with horror or discomfort
Threaten or get angry
Ask abrupt or rapid questions
Engage in power struggles; demanding 'just stop'
Accuse them of attention seeking
Get frustrated
Ignore other warning signs
Promise to keep things secret

Is the camp geared towards young people with mental health issues or is this training “just in case”?
Best regards, Niklas 🎈
#1 Just in case! It deals with a lot of disclosures because it becomes an environment where they actually feel safe and supported. Also, a lot of the activities are based towards improving confidence, we think that has a lot to do with it.
